Understanding the World

Involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

Children talk about past and present events in their own lives and in the lives of family members. Practitioners often write these “stories” and share them with the rest of the group which the children really enjoy. Children often bring things from home to “show” which is how we learn about similarities and differences between each other and among families, communities and traditions.

Children share their stories and explore similarities and differences in relation to places and objects. We explore differences and similarities in the outside world and experience the changes in season. We have a display in the foyer called the “interest table” where things are displayed for children to talk about. We have animal visitors in the setting and children make observations of them and talk about how they can take care of them.

Children have a computer to play games on. They are simple to use and children are taught how to operate programmes. Children also like to take photographs of each other and learn to take care of the camera and ipad. Children have opportunity to watch back a video clip of their play, and enjoy talking with each other about their play.
